Our day began a little earlier today with breakfast being at 7 and we were on our way to Chiquian by 7:30. We did our devotional time in the bus, and had a great time talking about Romans 2 – judging others when we ourselves are guilty. The discussion was lively and I really enjoy the insights and thoughts these young people bring to the table.
We arrived in Chiquian about 10, right on schedule. After dropping our things off at the church, Erick took us on a trek through town and up to an overlook where a large cross stands. From the cross you can see the whole valley, and it is an amazing sight – too wonderful for words. The majesty of the mountains and the smallness of everything else is extremely overwhelming as you sit and gaze. We gathered together to pray for the people of the village, for the Ebenezer church, for Erick as he ministers there, for the children and the members of the church, etc. When we are brought to the recognition of our frailty and smallness, we are reminded of the greatness of our God to such a deeper degree.
From there we headed over to the water fountain – at the opposite side of the village. (We stopped off at a shop so I could purchase a Peruvian hat, so I could look like Erick J) The waterfalls were overflowing with water – it was hard even getting close to them. The team took pictures there and on the way back to the village. It was refreshing being near the waterfalls, but we were ready to work with the kids.
After a quick lunch, the kids began coming. The team did an excellent job playing games, coloring, doing puzzles, face painting, etc. Anything to connect with the kids. Part of the team went on house visits, and seemed to have a wonderful time visiting the people of the church.
When we were all back together, Abel gave his presentation on Joshua 4, and the group sang some songs. It began to rain (as it had on and off all day), so we ended and headed for the hotel.
This group is a fun bunch of students who care for each other well, but also know how to have fun together. It is neat listening to their conversations and hearing them poking fun at each other – especially this evening when we looked at a bunch of the pictures for this week that were posted on Facebook. They laugh together – and that is a sign of a team that is coming together well.
I am excited about them going back to Cedarville. I pray that they will bring their enthusiasm for the Word, for others, for the children, etc. back with them. Many have talked this week about their desire to be in full time ministry, but they are not sure what it looks like. My prayer for them is that they would realize the ministry they have before them where they are now, and allow God to open doors of ministry for them as they trust Him day by day.
Tomorrow we are back at the center in Huaraz, and then after dinner with Pastor Andres (and his family), Erick, Maggie (a young Austrian lady we met on Monday) and Billy (a Peruvian we met on Monday) and possibly Solidad, we will be taking the night bus to Lima. We are praying for safety as we travel – and maybe even a good nights sleep on the bus??
God has been faithful and although the kids are a little sun burnt (so am I) and Levi is feeling a little sick tonight, I am looking forward to a great day tomorrow as we see His faithfulness shine through again!
