Guatemala – Bundles of Love – Day 3 (December 5)

So I got an idea for you, when you go to another country, change your clock to local time.  Monday Morning came a little early for our crew because last night I set my alarm to 6:45 – however, my clock was still set to Eastern Standard Time – yeah, 1 hour earlier than Guatemala.  Well, that just gave the 4 other guys in my room more time to get ready.  Seriously, we were all awake already (well, Josh was still working his way up), so it wasn’t a big deal, but I think I won’t be in charge of the alarm tonight.

After breakfast we hopped into the car for our 2 hour drive to the first center – Chorjale.  While we were driving, we did our devotional for the day (Bundles Full of Deception –Joshua 9) and we had a wonderful conversation about pitfalls in life that seek to destroy our walk with God. We stopped at a rest area about half way there and were told that we needed to shift some people to the other vehicles because the road was rough and we needed to lighten the load.

When we arrived at the child care center, the children were anxiously awaiting us.  The first kid I talked with was Edison (I thought he said Harrison) and was 12 years old – just like Harrison.  I thought it was cool – he just thought I was weird.  Anyway, we played a little soccer, then gathered in a large circle to introduce ourselves and then Dan Anderson shared the gospel.

After his presentation, we began to hand out bundles.  It was chaotic!!  A kid would come to the door and they would call off his/her name.  We would fumble through all of the bundles to find the kids name so we could give it to them and then take a picture with them.  It was a little overwhelming.  Hopefully we won’t do this again later.

Finally the last bundles were distributed.  Harrison and Aaron (Brian’s kid) were teaching the children tag.  Brian told us that most of the kids that stayed to play were actually orphans – it was neat to see them playing with the kids.

We loaded up and headed for Chicalquix – the second center.  When we arrived we were welcomed by the kids and staff.  We were asked to sit for lunch, and they served us some of the best steak I have ever eaten!  I don’t know what kind of animal it was, nor do I want to, but it was delicious!  Dee gave me hers, and they gave me another extra piece – Praise the Lord!

We went into the church (connected to the center) and the kids applauded as we were ushered into the front of the church.  We were able to share a little about who we are and where we are from and then Dan spoke again.  They all responded very well to his presentation.

Again we left the church and prepared to hand out bundles – over 300 of them.  We had a better process this time – we called the name on the bag, and the child (or family member) came to pick it up.  We took pictures with every child who came forward.  We hugged the kids, laughed with them, gave them their bundles, and said “Dios Le bendiga” or God bless you.  Dan Meyer said much more because he could speak Spanish, but the rest of us kept to the simple greetings.

When all was said and done we headed back to the hotel, went out to eat, and then packed it up for the evening.
